Collaborator, Not Calculator

AI 101

Collaborator, Not Calculator

A calculator gives you the right answer.

Every time.
No exceptions.

ChatGPT does something different.

It generates a response — word by word — based on patterns in language.
It can search the web now. That helps.
But it still interprets what it finds.

Searching and knowing aren’t the same thing.

Most of the time, that response is useful.
Sometimes, it’s wrong.
Occasionally, it’s wrong and sounds completely certain.

This isn’t a flaw to work around.
It’s the nature of the tool.

A calculator is a machine.
ChatGPT is a thinking partner.

You wouldn’t hand a thinking partner your final answer without reviewing it.
The same applies here.

The people who get the most out of AI aren’t the ones who trust it blindly.
They’re the ones who stay in the conversation.

They push back.
They ask follow-ups.
They bring their own judgment.

The AI generates.
You decide.

Today’s Action: Ask ChatGPT something you actually want to know. Then ask it: “How confident are you in that? What might you be getting wrong?” See what it says.

What’s next: The strange reason AI can be certain about something it made up.

Better is a direction, not a destination.
